A note for rideshare and vehicle-for-hire platforms

9+demerit points on the driver's abstract are part of the City's screening criteria

In Toronto, the City does not license rideshare drivers directly. The platform applies on the driver's behalf and shares a criminal check and driving record with the City before a licence is issued. The City's screening criteria cover both criminal convictions and driving history, including 9 or more demerit points on the driver's abstract. A driver needs a separate licence for each platform they drive for.

Other municipalities set their own rules and documents. Before you rely on any provider's check for a municipal licence, confirm with that municipality which document it accepts.

01Screening gig workers

Can you run a background check on an independent contractor in Canada?
Yes, with their consent. A contractor isn't on your payroll, but consent-based checks work the same way. Consent is captured in the Credibled flow before any check runs.
Which checks should a gig platform run?
It depends on the work. Most platforms start with a Canadian criminal record check with identity verification. Add a driver's abstract for anyone who drives, references for work inside customers' homes, and credential verification for licensed trades.
Does a criminal record check include the driver's licence?
No. They're separate records. Identity verification confirms the licence is genuine and belongs to the person holding it, but driving history comes from the driver's abstract.
Can you screen workers who are new to Canada?
Yes. Identity verification works across 13,500+ document types, international criminal record checks cover 200+ jurisdictions, and employment verification contacts previous employers abroad.
Do you offer vulnerable sector checks for care, childcare or tutoring platforms?
Not today. A vulnerable sector check requires the worker to attend a police service in person. If your workers are with children or vulnerable adults, check what your province and your contracts require.

How long does a gig worker background check take?
A Canadian criminal record check usually comes back in about 15 minutes. Identity verification is instant. Driver's abstracts take 1 to 3 business days. References and employment verification depend on how fast people reply. The clock starts when the worker submits consent.
Can workers complete the check on their phone?
Yes. The worker gives consent, verifies their ID and submits their details from their phone.
Can we trigger checks from our own app?
Yes. Send a worker and a list of check types through the API, and receive a webhook on every status change. A sandbox key is available when you sign up.
What happens when a check returns a possible match?
The check moves to needs review. A name-based match is not confirmation of a record, so no decision should rest on it until it has been reviewed.

How often should we re-screen gig workers?
There is no single rule. Set a cycle that fits the work and your client contracts, and note that some municipalities apply their screening criteria at every licence renewal. You can order a fresh check at any time. Automatic re-screening is planned for 2027.
How much does it cost?
