Time to hire

The candidate you don't call back today works across the street tomorrow

Hospitality and retail hire faster than almost any other industry, and lose candidates faster too. A server who interviews on Tuesday has two other offers by Thursday.

Screening should not be the step that loses them. On Credibled, a Canadian criminal record check comes back in about 15 minutes. Offer in the morning, cleared by lunch, on the schedule for the weekend.

Right-sized screening

Not every hire needs every check

A host, a cashier and a cash-office supervisor carry different risks. Screening them the same way either costs too much or misses what matters.

Credibled lets you build a package per role and send it with one link.

Pay per check

Priced for patio season and the holiday rush

You might hire 40 people in November and 4 in February. Screening contracts are usually priced as if you hire the same number every month.

Pay per check. No subscription, no minimum, no annual commitment. A quiet January costs you nothing. A busy December is not a renegotiation. You only pay for completed checks, never ones still waiting on a candidate.

A quiet month
$0

No subscription, no platform fee and no minimum volume. If you don't hire, you don't pay.

A busy month
Per check

Every hire is screened per check, with nothing to renegotiate. Only completed checks are billed.

Duplicate detection

Three locations, one candidate, one charge

Candidates apply to every location within transit distance, and each manager screens their own hires. The same person gets checked three times, and nobody notices until the invoice.

Credibled catches it at the point of request. If anyone on your account ordered a check for this candidate in the last 30 days, you see it before anything is charged, with who ordered it, at which location, and its status. Cancel, or proceed anyway.

It also spares the candidate. Being asked for ID and consent three times by the same brand is a good reason to take another offer.

What your new hire sees

Done from their phone, between shifts

Your candidates are often on their feet all day and checking email on their phone. One secure link, no app, no account. They sign consent, add their details, verify their ID with a selfie and submit.

Candidates from anywhere

Identity verification that doesn't need a Canadian credit file

Many hospitality and retail hires arrived in Canada recently. ID checks that lean on credit history fail when there is no file to build questions from.

13,500+

Document types, verified directly

Credibled verifies the document itself, with a liveness check. A study permit or a new permanent resident card works the same way as an Ontario driver's licence.

Reference checks

References at $9 per candidate, with a built-in honesty check

$9per candidate. Not per referee.

The candidate enters their own referees, and reminders go out automatically every 24 hours for up to 10 days, so no manager is chasing anyone between services.

Credibled flags a reference when the candidate and referee submitted from the same IP address or the same device, or when it came from a personal email. Useful when a "former manager" turns out to be a roommate. The alert doesn't block anything. You decide, and your decision is logged.

Screening that holds up

Check what's relevant to the job

In Ontario, the Human Rights Code protects candidates from discrimination based on a record of offences, which covers provincial offences and criminal convictions that have been pardoned. You can consider an unpardoned Criminal Code conviction, but the strongest policy ties each check to the role.

Credibled helps you do that. Build packages by role, get consent before anything runs, and keep a dated record of what you checked and why.

This is general information, not legal advice. Rules differ by province.

When the candidate is paying

Your new hire's police check, without the police station

Some restaurants and retailers ask new hires to bring their own police check. That usually means an appointment, a fee and a wait, while the shift sits empty.

MyCheck is Credibled's personal criminal record check. Your candidate completes it online, with no appointment, and shares the result with you. Set up a partnership and your candidates are directed to MyCheck.

Support

A named account manager, at any volume

Every account gets a named person, at 5 checks a month or 500. Not a shared inbox, not a ticket queue.

When a result comes back incomplete on a Friday and the new hire is on the schedule for Saturday brunch, that is the difference between a phone call and a support ticket.

Straight answers

What we can't do, so you know upfront

We aren't part of gaming or liquor licensing.

Casino and gaming roles may need separate registration with the provincial regulator. We screen alongside that, not instead of it.

We can't run a vulnerable sector check.

No Canadian provider can. It is requested through the police service where the candidate lives.

We don't make the decision.

We report what we find. Whether it matters for the role is your call, made within human rights law.

FAQ

Questions restaurants, hotels and retailers ask

01Speed and process

How long does a background check take for a restaurant or retail job?

A Canadian criminal record check usually comes back in about 15 minutes, and almost always within 4 hours. The clock starts when the candidate submits their consent form, so most delays are a candidate who hasn't finished their part yet.

What does the candidate have to do?

Open a link, confirm their identity with a photo of their ID and a selfie, give consent, and add referees if you asked for references. It works on any phone, with no app and no account.

Can we run a check the same day we make an offer?

Yes. Most criminal record checks come back within about 15 minutes of the candidate completing their part.

Do you catch duplicate checks across our locations?

Yes. If anyone on your account ordered a check for the same candidate in the last 30 days, you see it before anything is charged, across every check type.

02What to check

Do retail and hospitality jobs require a background check?

Usually not by law. Most employers screen anyway, especially for cash handling, keyholders, guest room access and management roles.

Which roles should get a credit check?

Roles with real financial responsibility: cash office, store and general managers, and head office finance. For front-line roles a credit check is rarely relevant.

Can we screen candidates who are new to Canada?

Yes. Identity verification checks the document itself, across more than 13,500 document types, so it doesn't depend on a Canadian credit history. International criminal record checks cover 200+ jurisdictions.

Can someone with a criminal record work in a restaurant or store?

Often, yes. It depends on the record and the role. In Ontario, provincial offences and pardoned convictions are protected under the Human Rights Code. The decision is yours, made within human rights law.

Can you run a vulnerable sector check?

No, and no Canadian provider can. It can only be requested through the police service where the candidate lives.

03Cost and getting started

How much does a background check cost?

Reference checks are $9 per candidate, whatever the number of referees. Other checks are priced per check, with no subscription and no minimum. Employment verification carries a published pass-through access fee.

Is there a contract or minimum volume?

No. Pay per check, no subscription, no annual commitment and no platform fee.

What if we want candidates to pay for their own check?

Set up a MyCheck partnership. Candidates complete their own criminal record check online at a preferential rate and share the result with you.

Can I start today without talking to sales?

Yes. Sign up with a work email and run your first check the same day.

Can we connect it to our HR or scheduling system?

Yes, through the API. Trigger requests, pull results and receive status webhooks from the system your team already uses.
