Abstracts are held by provincial, territorial and state licensing authorities, not by police. Credibled queries the authority that issued the licence and returns the record as it stands today, flagged and ready to review.

Where it stops
Not a DOT driver qualification file. A US interstate carrier's file needs motor vehicle records from every licensing state over 3 years, safety performance history, Clearinghouse queries, a medical certificate and more. Credibled supplies the motor vehicle record. It does not build or maintain the file.
Not a drug or alcohol test. Credibled does not offer testing. Safety-sensitive roles use a specialist provider.
Not a carrier safety record. Ontario's CVOR is held against the operating company. An abstract is the individual driver's record.
Not a lifetime record. Most jurisdictions retain 3 to 5 years of history, so older items may not appear.

Before you order
What is a driver's abstract?
A driver's abstract is the record of a person's driving history held by the provincial, territorial or state licensing authority. It lists licence class, status, points, violations, restrictions and prohibitions. It is also called a driving record check or motor vehicle record (MVR).
What do I need to run one?
The candidate's name, date of birth and driver's licence number. The candidate confirms their details and gives consent in the flow.
Do I need the candidate's consent?
Yes. Most jurisdictions require explicit consent from the driver before a record is released for screening. Credibled captures that consent in the flow before the record is requested.
Is this the same as a criminal record check?
No. A criminal record check reports convictions held in police databases. A driver's abstract reports driving history held by the licensing authority. Many employers order both on the same candidate.
Does this satisfy DOT driver qualification file requirements?
No, not on its own. A US DOT file requires motor vehicle records from every state where the driver held a licence in the past 3 years, safety performance history from previous employers, Clearinghouse queries, a medical certificate and more. Credibled supplies the motor vehicle record. It does not build or maintain the file.
Do you offer drug and alcohol testing?
No. Credibled does not offer testing. For safety-sensitive roles, employers use a specialist testing provider alongside the abstract.
Is this the same as a CVOR?
No. A driver's abstract is the individual driver's record. Ontario's CVOR is a safety record held against the operating company, not the driver.

Certified and uncertified
What is the difference between certified and uncertified?
An uncertified abstract is a digital driving record pulled from provincial data sources, suitable for most employment and screening purposes. A certified abstract is an official government-issued copy carrying a provincial seal, stamp or signature, available only from government channels.
Can Credibled issue a certified abstract?
No, and neither can any other third-party screening provider. Certified copies come directly from government channels such as ServiceOntario, ICBC, SAAQ or a provincial registry office.
My client asks for a certified copy. What do I do?
The applicant requests it from their provincial service centre. If a contract, regulator or insurer specifies certified, only the government-issued copy satisfies it. For employment screening, the uncertified abstract is what is used.

Coverage
Which provinces and states are covered?
Credibled returns driver abstracts in Canada and the United States. Coverage and content vary by province, territory and state, because each licensing authority holds its own record.
What about Alberta and Quebec?
This check is not available in Alberta, where records are released through a verified government account or in person, so applicants request their own. Availability in Quebec is limited: records run through SAAQ and are not readily available electronically for all purposes.
Do out-of-province or US offences appear?
They can. Many provinces share data with each other, and Ontario, Quebec and British Columbia have reciprocal arrangements with some US states, so an out-of-province or cross-border offence can appear on the abstract.
How far back does the record go?
Most provinces retain driver information for a limited period, typically 3 to 5 years. An abstract is a snapshot of recent convictions and suspensions, not a lifetime record.

Reading the result
What does the report return?
Licence details: name, date of birth, licence number, type, class, status, issue and expiry dates, issuing country and province or state, record type and total points. Plus 7 record tables: correspondence, prohibitions, messages, restrictions, violations, addresses and other licences.
What do Cleared and Review mean?
Cleared means nothing on the record needs attention. Review means someone should look at the result before deciding. Review does not mean the candidate failed.
What are potential positives and negatives?
Every abstract returns 2 panels. Potential positives lists reassuring findings, such as no prohibitions on record. Potential negatives lists findings worth a look, such as violations within the past year. Where there are none, the report states No potential negatives. Flags are surfaced for a human to judge, not applied as a decision.
