Your situation

Renewing, new or private investigator?

Every Ontario security guard and private investigator licence application needs a CRJMC, new or renewal. Here is where it fits in each case.

Renewal

Renewing your licence

Licences expire 2 birthdays after they are issued. You can renew up to 90 days before expiry. Order a new Level 2 check, then upload the original PDF with your renewal. $49.

New guard

First security guard licence

Complete the mandatory basic training, get your training completion number and pass the test. Then order your Level 2 check so it is fresh when you apply. You must be 18 or older.

PI or dual

Private investigator or both

The same CRJMC covers a private investigator licence and a dual security guard and private investigator licence. 1 Level 2 check per application.

Already hold a valid licence from another Canadian province? Ontario does not ask you to repeat training and testing, but you still need a CRJMC issued in Canada.

Step by step

How to renew your Ontario security licence

Renewal runs through Ontario.ca. The CRJMC is the one part you can finish today, from your phone.

  • 1. Check your expiry date

Your licence expires 2 birthdays after it was issued. You can renew up to 90 calendar days before that date, and the renewed licence runs 2 years, linked to your birthday.

  • 2. Get a new CRJMC

It must be issued within 6 months of the day you apply. Order MyCheck Level 2 at $49. Most checks complete in minutes.

  • 3. Apply on Ontario.ca

Sign in with your Ontario.ca login, upload the original PDF of your check, and pay the licence fee: $80 for a security guard or private investigator licence, or $160 for both.

  • 4. Wait for approval

A correctly completed online application can take up to 15 calendar days. A mail-in application can take up to 30.

An accredited police service searches the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records through the Canadian Police Information Centre. Most checks complete in minutes. The certificate lands in your inbox as a PDF. Upload that file, as is, to your licence application.

FAQ

Security licence CRJMC questions, answered

Do I need a new CRJMC to renew my security licence in Ontario?

Yes. Renewals use the same list of documents as a new application, and that list includes a criminal record and judicial matters check issued within 6 months of the date you apply. Order a new one for each renewal.

Is MyCheck Level 2 a criminal record and judicial matters check?

MyCheck Level 2 is the enhanced check that covers what Ontario calls a criminal record and judicial matters check: criminal convictions, outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. Level 1 is not enough for a licence. Compare the levels in full.

Can I get a CRJMC online for my security licence?

Yes. Ontario accepts a CRJMC from an Ontario police service, the OPP, an Ontario First Nations police service, or a private business authorized to provide police record checks. With MyCheck, you order online, verify your ID from your phone, and the certificate is issued by an accredited police service.

How recent does my CRJMC need to be?

It must be issued within 6 months of the date you submit your licence application. Order it when you are ready to apply, not months ahead.

Can I upload a scan, a screenshot or a printed copy?

No. Online applications need the original, unaltered digital PDF, and mail applications need the original paper document. Upload the PDF we email you, exactly as it arrives.

How much does a CRJMC for a security licence cost?

MyCheck Level 2 is $49, with identity verification included and no access fee. The ministry's licence fee is separate: $80 for a security guard or private investigator licence, or $160 for both.

How long does it take?

Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes, and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer. After you apply, Ontario can take up to 15 calendar days to process an online application. Read how long a criminal record check takes.

When can I renew my security licence?

Up to 90 calendar days before it expires. Licences expire 2 birthdays after they are issued, and a renewed licence runs 2 years, linked to your birthday.

I live outside Ontario. Can I apply for an Ontario licence?

Ontario may accept a check for applicants who live outside the province, as long as it was issued in Canada and is equivalent to a CRJMC. MyCheck works anywhere in Canada. If you already hold a valid licence from another province, you do not repeat Ontario's training and test. See MyCheck across Canada.

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted. Before you pay, make sure you choose Level 2 and enter your legal name exactly as it appears on your ID.
