Which check do you need?
Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in Waterloo Region, and only police or an accredited agency can issue them.
Vulnerable sector check
Roles and placements working with children, seniors, patients or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only the police service that polices where you live can issue one. In Waterloo Region, that is the Waterloo Regional Police Service. It may involve fingerprints.
Fingerprint-certified check
Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, including study and work permit applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Is this a Waterloo Regional Police check?
No. The Waterloo Regional Police Service runs its own process and its own online portal. If you already started an application with them, log in through their website. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider, and your certificate is issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository. Most employers accept it. If yours has named the Waterloo Regional Police Service specifically, confirm with them first.
Does it cover Kitchener and Cambridge?
Yes, and every township in the region. The search is national, so a police check in Kitchener is the same as one in Waterloo, Cambridge, Elmira or anywhere else in Canada.
My co-op employer wants a police check before I start. Is this the right one?
Usually, yes. Most co-op employers ask for a criminal record check, which is what MyCheck provides. Order Level 1 unless they named Level 2, and forward the PDF when it arrives. If the role involves children or vulnerable people, ask whether they need a vulnerable sector check instead.
My placement is in a hospital, school or childcare centre. Do I need something else?

I am an international student. Can I order?
Yes, if you have a Canadian address and an original, unexpired government ID such as your passport or residence permit. The check covers Canadian records only, so it will not show anything from your home country. If you need a check for a study or work permit, that is a fingerprint-based check, not this one.
