Two ways to get it

Edmonton police information check or MyCheck: what is the difference?

In Alberta, police services issue a police information check, which goes further than a criminal record check. They do not offer a convictions-only check, which comes from accredited providers like MyCheck. Here is how the two compare.

If the organisation asking has named a police information check, or a check from the Edmonton Police Service, ask whether a criminal record check is acceptable before you order. If they need a vulnerable sector check, apply to EPS. If they need a criminal record check for a job, an agency or a lease and you want it today, MyCheck is built for that.

Which police service is yours?

Edmonton Police Service or RCMP: who polices where you live?

The Edmonton Police Service polices the City of Edmonton. Most communities around it are policed by the RCMP, each through its own detachment.

For a MyCheck criminal record check, none of this changes anything. The search is national, so you can order from anywhere in the Edmonton region. It matters for a vulnerable sector check. Jobs, students and practicums

Police check for a job or practicum in Edmonton

Employers and staffing agencies across Edmonton ask for a police check before a start date, and students at the University of Alberta, MacEwan, NAIT and NorQuest often need one for a practicum. Which check depends on who you will work with.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Understand your resultWhat Negative, Cleared and Review mean on your certificate.
Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in Edmonton, and only police or an accredited agency can issue them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Police only

Vulnerable sector check

Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only police can issue one. In Edmonton, apply to EPS, which also accepts residents of 8 nearby communities. It may involve fingerprints.

Accredited agency

Fingerprint-certified check

Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

Edmonton police check questions, answered

Can I get a police check in Edmonton online?

Yes, two ways. The Edmonton Police Service takes police information check applications online, and EPS currently processes them within 5 to 10 business days. MyCheck is a separate option: a criminal record check you complete entirely online, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes.

Is MyCheck the Edmonton Police Service portal?

No. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider and is not affiliated with the Edmonton Police Service. If you already started an application with EPS, continue it through the EPS portal. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.

Is an Edmonton police check from MyCheck the same as an EPS police information check?

No. A police information check is the check Alberta police services issue. It covers convictions plus outstanding charges, court orders, discharges and other police information. MyCheck Level 1 covers criminal convictions, and Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. If the organisation asking has named a police information check specifically, ask them before you order.

How much does a police check cost in Edmonton?

EPS lists $80 for employment or housing, $55 for post-secondary and practicums, and $20 for volunteers with a letter from the organisation. A $25 fingerprinting fee may apply, waived for volunteers. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee.

How long does an Edmonton police check take?

EPS says its police information checks are currently processed within 5 to 10 business days. With MyCheck, most checks complete in minutes and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer.

I live in St. Albert, Sherwood Park or Spruce Grove. Can I still order?

Yes. The search is national, so a MyCheck criminal record check works the same anywhere in the Edmonton region. Where you live only matters for a vulnerable sector check. EPS takes those from residents of Beaumont, St. Albert, Sherwood Park, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Spruce Grove, Stony Plain and Morinville. Everyone else outside the city applies to their local RCMP detachment.

I want to coach or volunteer at my child's school. Which check do I need?

Usually a vulnerable sector check, because the role involves children. The organisation decides, so ask them first. In Edmonton that check comes from EPS, which charges $20 for volunteers with a letter from the organisation and waives the fingerprinting fee. MyCheck cannot issue a vulnerable sector check. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

I need a vulnerable sector check. Can you do it?

No. Only police can issue a vulnerable sector check, and no private provider can. In Edmonton, that is the Edmonton Police Service. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Who sees my result?

You do. The certificate is delivered to you and nobody else. It is not sent to an employer unless you send it.

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains which check you need before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
