Three ways to get it

Charlottetown Police, your RCMP detachment or MyCheck: what is the difference?

On Prince Edward Island, who handles your criminal record check depends on where you live and why you need it. Charlottetown Police Services, for example, does not do checks for employment. Here is how the options compare.

Charlottetown, Summerside and Kensington police don't charge volunteers who bring a letter from the organisation.

Town police or RCMP: who polices where you live on PEI?

The RCMP polices every community on Prince Edward Island that does not have its own police service. Three municipalities do.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Understand your resultWhat Negative, Cleared and Review mean on your certificate.
Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for on PEI, and only police or an accredited agency can issue them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Police only

Vulnerable sector check

Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only the police service or RCMP detachment that covers where you live can do it, and the organisation has to request it, usually with a description of the role. It may involve fingerprints.

Accredited agency

Fingerprint-certified check

Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

PEI criminal record check questions, answered

Can I get a criminal record check in PEI online?

Yes. MyCheck is a criminal record check you complete entirely online from anywhere on Prince Edward Island, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most checks complete in minutes. Charlottetown Police Services and RCMP detachments take applications in person, and Summerside Police Services links to an online application for Summerside residents.

Is MyCheck part of Charlottetown Police or the RCMP?

No. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider and is not affiliated with Charlottetown Police Services, Summerside Police Services, Kensington Police, the RCMP or the Province of Prince Edward Island. If you already started an application with a police service, finish it there. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.

I live in Charlottetown and need a check for a job. Where do I get it?

Not from Charlottetown Police Services. It only does criminal record checks for volunteer positions and refers people who need one for employment to private providers. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider you can use online: order, verify your ID with your phone and get a police-issued certificate by email, usually within minutes.

How much does a criminal record check cost in PEI?

Police services on the Island do not publish one fee. Charlottetown, Summerside and Kensington police don't charge volunteers who bring a letter from the organisation, and RCMP detachments set their own fee, so call yours for pricing. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee.

How long does a criminal record check take in PEI?

The police services on the Island do not publish a set timeframe, and it depends on the service and on whether fingerprints are needed. With MyCheck, most checks complete in minutes and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer.

I live in Summerside, Stratford or a rural community. Can I still order?

Yes. The search is national, so a MyCheck criminal record check works the same anywhere on Prince Edward Island, from Tignish to Souris. Where you live only matters if you need a vulnerable sector check. Then you apply to the police service or RCMP detachment that covers your community.

Does PEI have a child abuse register check?

We could not find a public child abuse register search on Prince Edward Island like the ones in Nova Scotia or Manitoba. Organisations on the Island generally rely on a police vulnerable sector check for people who work with children. If an organisation asks you for something else, ask them exactly what they need and where to apply.

I want to coach or volunteer with kids. Which check do I need?

Usually a vulnerable sector check, because the role involves children. The organisation decides, and it has to request the check, so ask them first. Charlottetown, Summerside and Kensington police don't charge volunteers who bring a letter from the organisation. MyCheck cannot issue a vulnerable sector check. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

I need a vulnerable sector check. Can you do it?

No. Only police can do a vulnerable sector check, and only the police service that covers where you live. That is Charlottetown, Summerside or Kensington police if you live in one of those municipalities, and your RCMP detachment anywhere else on the Island.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains which check you need before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
