Three ways to get it

Winnipeg Police, your RCMP detachment or MyCheck: what is the difference?

Most Manitobans get a criminal record check from the Winnipeg Police Service, the Brandon Police Service or their local RCMP detachment. Each works differently. Here is how they compare with MyCheck.

If your detachment charges less and you can wait, that is a perfectly good option. MyCheck is for when you need a criminal record check today, for a job, an agency or a lease, without a trip into town. If the organisation asking has named a police service, or needs a vulnerable sector check, apply to the police service where you live.

Fees and process from the Winnipeg Police Service record checks page and RCMP Manitoba detachment list, checked 9 October 2026. In Brandon, the Brandon Police Service charges $58.75 online or in person, with a $13 rate for not-for-profit agencies in person.

Which police service is yours?

Municipal police or RCMP: who polices where you live in Manitoba?

The RCMP is Manitoba's provincial police, so most towns and rural municipalities are policed by an RCMP detachment. A handful of cities and towns have their own police service.

For a MyCheck criminal record check, none of this changes anything. The search is national, so you order the same way from anywhere in Manitoba. It matters for a vulnerable sector check, which only the police service that covers where you live can do.

Jobs, students and practicums

Criminal record check for a job or practicum in Manitoba

Employers and staffing agencies across Manitoba ask for a criminal record check before a start date, and students at the University of Manitoba, the University of Winnipeg, Red River College Polytechnic and Brandon University often need one for a practicum. Which check depends on who you will work with.

  • Coaching and youth programs
  • Childcare and education placements
  • Clinical placements and care homes

In Manitoba, work with children or vulnerable adults often needs two things: a vulnerable sector check from the police service where you live, and a Child Abuse Registry or Adult Abuse Registry check from the Province of Manitoba. Ask which ones you need before you order. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

MyCheck is not affiliated with any school or with the Province of Manitoba.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in Manitoba, and only police or the province can issue them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Police only

Vulnerable sector check

Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only the police service or RCMP detachment that covers where you live can do it, and the Winnipeg Police Service only does them for Winnipeg residents. It may involve fingerprints.

Province of Manitoba

Child and Adult Abuse Registry checks

Work with children or vulnerable adults in Manitoba often also needs a check of the province's Child Abuse Registry or Adult Abuse Registry. You apply to the Province of Manitoba, online, by mail or in person. Each costs $20.

Need it for immigration, a visa or use outside Canada? That takes a fingerprint-certified check. RCMP criminal record check: the 2 kinds explained. Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

Manitoba criminal record check questions, answered

Can I get a criminal record check in Manitoba online?

Yes. The Winnipeg Police Service and the Brandon Police Service both take criminal record check applications online, and RCMP detachments generally process them in person. MyCheck is a separate option: a criminal record check you complete entirely online from anywhere in Manitoba, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes.

Is MyCheck part of the Winnipeg Police Service or the RCMP?

No. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider and is not affiliated with the Winnipeg Police Service, the RCMP, any other police service or the Province of Manitoba. If you already started an application with a police service, finish it there. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.

How much does a criminal record check cost in Manitoba?

It depends on who issues it. The Winnipeg Police Service charges $65, taxes included. The Brandon Police Service charges $58.75. RCMP detachments set their own fee, and several list $10. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee. Fingerprints, if a police service asks for them, cost extra.

How long does a criminal record check take in Manitoba?

The Winnipeg Police Service and the Brandon Police Service process checks in the order they are received and do not publish a set timeframe. RCMP detachments vary. With MyCheck, most checks complete in minutes and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer.

I live in Brandon, Steinbach or a rural municipality. Can I still order?

Yes. The search is national, so a MyCheck criminal record check works the same anywhere in Manitoba, including a criminal record check in Brandon or a town with no detachment nearby. Where you live only matters if you need a vulnerable sector check. Then you apply to the police service or RCMP detachment that covers your community.

What is a Child Abuse Registry check, and do I need one?

It is a check of the Province of Manitoba's Child Abuse Registry, which lists people found to have abused a child. Employers and organisations often ask for one when the work involves caring for children. You apply to the province yourself, online, by mail or in person. It costs $20, and the province waives the fee for volunteers, student trainees and work placements with children. MyCheck cannot do this check.

What about an Adult Abuse Registry check?

It works the same way for work with vulnerable adults. You apply to the Province of Manitoba, and it costs $20. In early October 2026, both registries were working through applications received about 3 weeks earlier, so apply early if your start date is close.

I want to coach or volunteer with kids. Which checks do I need?

Usually a vulnerable sector check from your local police and a Child Abuse Registry check from the province, because the role involves children. The organisation decides, so ask them first. Some police services and RCMP detachments reduce or waive their fee for volunteers with a letter from the organisation. MyCheck cannot issue either check. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

I need a vulnerable sector check. Can you do it?

No. Only police can do a vulnerable sector check, and only the police service that covers where you live. The Winnipeg Police Service does them for Winnipeg residents, the Brandon Police Service for Brandon residents, and RCMP detachments for the communities they police.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains which check you need before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
