The Toronto Police Service covers the whole City of Toronto, including the former cities of North York, Scarborough, Etobicoke, East York and York. The rest of the GTA has its own regional police, and each one takes record check applications from its own residents.

Which check do you need?
Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in Toronto, and only police or an accredited agency can issue them.
Vulnerable sector check
Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only the police service where you live can do it. In Toronto that is TPS, and you need an agency code from the organisation first. It may involve fingerprints.
Fingerprint-certified check
Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Can I get a police check in Toronto online?
Yes, two ways. The Toronto Police Service takes police record check applications online from Toronto residents, and on 14 October 2026 it was processing criminal record checks received on 2 October. MyCheck is a separate option: a criminal record check you complete entirely online, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes.
Is MyCheck the Toronto Police Service?
No. MyCheck is run by Credibled, a private Canadian provider based in Toronto, and is not affiliated with the Toronto Police Service. If you already applied to TPS, wait for that result. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.
What is a police clearance in Toronto?
Police clearance, clearance letter, police check and police record check usually mean the same thing: a criminal record check. TPS also calls its criminal record check a Level 1 check or clearance letter. MyCheck Level 1 is a criminal record check, and Level 2 covers what Ontario calls a criminal record and judicial matters check. If the clearance is for immigration or a visa, read the next answer first.
I need a police clearance for immigration or a visa. Is this it?
Usually not. Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, in Canada and abroad, generally ask for a fingerprint-based certified criminal record check, which comes from an RCMP-accredited fingerprinting company or your local police. MyCheck is a name-based check and is not suitable for immigration or visa applications. Check what the immigration authority asks for before you order anything.
How much does a police check cost in Toronto?
TPS lists $26.72 for a criminal record check or a criminal record and judicial matters check for employment, and no charge for volunteers with a letter from the organisation. A vulnerable sector check is $71.72 for employment and $26.72 for volunteers. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee.

I live in Mississauga, Vaughan or Pickering. Can I still order?
Yes. TPS only takes applications from Toronto residents, but a MyCheck criminal record check works the same anywhere in the GTA, because the search is national. For a vulnerable sector check, apply to the police service where you live: Peel, York, Durham or Halton Regional Police, or the OPP in Caledon.
My employer asked for a criminal record and judicial matters check. Which level is that?
Level 2. It covers criminal convictions plus outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. If the employer has asked for a vulnerable sector check instead, that has to come from TPS.
I want to coach or volunteer with kids. Which check do I need?
Usually a vulnerable sector check, because the role involves children. Ask the organisation first: TPS needs an agency code from them before you can apply, and charges volunteers $26.72. If the organisation only needs a criminal record check, TPS does those for volunteers at no charge with a letter. MyCheck cannot issue a vulnerable sector check. I need a vulnerable sector check. Can you do it?
