Ask your employer 3 things first

Every employer sets its own rules for a criminal record check for employment. 3 quick questions make sure you order the right one, because checks are non-refundable once submitted.

  • 1. Which check do you need?

A criminal record check (Level 1), a criminal record and judicial matters check (Level 2), or a vulnerable sector check. MyCheck does the first two. A vulnerable sector check only comes from the police where you live.

  • 2. How recent must it be?

A check reflects your record on the day it was run, so many employers set a limit on how old it can be. If you already have a certificate, ask whether it is recent enough.

  • 3. How should you send it?

Ask whether they accept the PDF certificate by email or upload, and whether they need it from a specific police service or provider. Some organisations name one.

Which check for which job

Police check for a job: which level?

If your employer named a level, order that one. If not, this is how it usually works. Work with children or vulnerable people is the one case MyCheck cannot cover.

Most jobs

Level 1 criminal record check

Office, retail, hospitality, warehouse, cleaning, delivery and trades jobs, and most staffing agency placements. Criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. $39.

When the posting says so

Level 2, judicial matters

When the job posting asks for a criminal record and judicial matters check, or the role carries responsibility, unsupervised access or a licensing requirement. Adds outstanding charges, warrants and court orders. $49.

Police only

Vulnerable sector check

Childcare, education, personal support work, nursing and clinical placements, and coaching. Roles with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check from the police service where you live. It may involve fingerprints.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order. Compare every level of check.

Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2 for your job?

If your employer named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding. In Ontario, police call the Level 2 equivalent a criminal record and judicial matters check.

What your employer receives

A police-issued certificate you control

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It comes to you, not to your employer, and you decide when to send it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you. Your employer can match it to your application.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what an employer looks for when they ask where a check came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

FAQ

Criminal record checks for employment, answered

Which criminal record check do I need for a job?

The one your employer named. If they did not name a level, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. If the posting mentions a criminal record and judicial matters check, or the role carries responsibility, unsupervised access or a licensing requirement, Level 2 is the usual ask. Work with children or vulnerable people usually needs a vulnerable sector check from the police where you live, which MyCheck does not offer.

Can an employer ask me for a criminal record check?

Yes. Many employers and staffing agencies ask for one before a start date, often as a condition of the job offer. With MyCheck, you order the check yourself, you give your consent in the process, and you decide who sees the certificate.

How long does a criminal record check for a job take?

Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes, and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer. Read how long a criminal record check takes.

How much does a criminal record check for employment cost?

$39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee. If your employer or staffing agency gave you a promo code, enter it at checkout. See what a criminal record check costs in Canada.

How recent does my check need to be?

Your employer decides. A criminal record check reflects your record on the day it was run, so many employers set a limit on how old it can be. Ask before you order. Read how long a criminal record check is good for.

What will my employer see?

Only the certificate you send them. It is delivered to you and nobody else. Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. Understand your result.

What if I have a criminal record?

Order the level your employer asked for. You declare your own convictions during the process, so they can be confirmed against the search. A conviction with a record suspension is not shown on Level 1 or Level 2. A small number of checks need fingerprint confirmation, and we tell you straight away if yours does.

Can I get it from my local police instead?

Yes. Most police services do criminal record checks, often for less, but processing usually takes longer, and some only accept people who live in their area. Compare your options for Toronto, Peel, York Region, Ottawa and Calgary, or find your area.

My staffing agency asked for a check. Do they have a code?

Some staffing agencies give their candidates a MyCheck promo code. Ask your recruiter before you order, and enter the code at checkout.

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page lists what to ask your employer before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
