2 kinds of criminal record check in BC, and which one you need

BC is the only province with its own program for screening people who work with children or vulnerable adults. That program and MyCheck do different jobs. Here is how to tell which one you need.

Vancouver to Fort St. John

Criminal record check in Vancouver, Surrey and across BC

Your check runs against the national RCMP repository, so where you live in BC does not change the result or the speed.

A criminal record check in Vancouver works exactly like one in Surrey, Burnaby, Richmond, Coquitlam, Langley, Delta, North Vancouver or Abbotsford. The same goes for Victoria, Saanich and Nanaimo on the Island, and for Kelowna, Kamloops, Vernon, Penticton, Chilliwack, Prince George and Fort St. John.

Who polices your community, and why it rarely matters: Vancouver, Victoria and several other cities have their own police services. Much of the rest of BC is policed by the RCMP. For a MyCheck criminal record check, none of that changes anything. It only matters for a vulnerable sector check, and in BC those go through the Criminal Records Review Program.

Up north, on the Island or somewhere the nearest detachment is hours away? That is where ordering online saves the most. There is nothing to drive to.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in BC, and only the province or an accredited agency can provide them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Province only

Criminal Records Review Program

Employees and volunteers of registered organisations who work with children or vulnerable adults are screened through the province's Criminal Records Review Program, including any vulnerable sector search. Your organisation sends you the link and access code.

Accredited agency

Fingerprint-certified check

Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

Criminal record checks in BC, answered

Can I get a criminal record check in BC online?

Yes. MyCheck is a criminal record check for BC that you complete entirely online. An accredited police service searches the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records and emails you a police-issued certificate. Most checks complete in minutes. If you work or volunteer with children or vulnerable adults for a registered organisation, you need the province's Criminal Records Review Program instead.

What is the Criminal Records Review Program, and do I need it?

It is the Government of BC's program for screening employees and volunteers of registered organisations who work with children or vulnerable adults. If that describes your role, your organisation is required to screen you through it and will send you a link and access code. If it does not, a standard criminal record check such as MyCheck is usually what is asked for.

My organisation gave me an access code. Is this the right place?

No. An access code means your organisation is registered with the Criminal Records Review Program and needs your check to go through it. Use the link they sent you. A MyCheck certificate cannot replace it.

Is there a free criminal record check in BC?

Criminal Records Review Program checks are free for volunteers at eligible organisations, through that organisation's link. MyCheck is not free: Level 1 is $39 CAD, with identity verification included and no access fee. What you pay for is doing it online in minutes, without an access code.

How do I get a criminal record check in BC for a job?

If the job does not involve children or vulnerable adults, order online, pick Level 1 unless your employer named Level 2, verify your ID from your phone and complete your declaration. Your certificate arrives by email, and you forward it to your employer.

How much does a criminal record check cost in BC?

With MyCheck, Level 1 is $39 CAD and Level 2 is $49 CAD. Identity verification is included in both, and there is no access fee. Criminal Records Review Program fees are set by the province, and police service fees by each service.

How long does a criminal record check take in BC?

Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes. The rest are usually back within 4 hours. Timing depends on how accurately you enter your details. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer. The Government of BC says its own program takes from 1 week to several weeks.

Does it work in Vancouver, Surrey and the rest of BC?

Yes. The search is national, so a criminal record check in Vancouver is the same as one in Surrey, Victoria, Kelowna, Prince George or anywhere else in BC, and anywhere else in Canada.

Is this an RCMP criminal record check?

It is a name-based search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records, run by an accredited police service, which issues your certificate. It is not the fingerprint-based certified check that the RCMP issues itself. See the 2 kinds of RCMP check.

I need a vulnerable sector check in BC. Can you do it?

No. In BC, vulnerable sector searches go through the Criminal Records Review Program, and no private provider can issue one. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains BC's 2 routes before you order. If you are unsure which you need, ask whoever requested it first.
