Three ways to get it

VPD, Surrey Police Service or MyCheck: what is the difference?

In BC, police services issue a police information check, and each one only takes applications from people who live in the area it polices. MyCheck works the same wherever you live. Here is how the three compare.

If the organisation asking has named a VPD or Surrey Police Service check, ask whether a criminal record check is acceptable before you order. If they need a vulnerable sector check, apply to your local police or follow the link they send you through the Criminal Records Review Program. If they need a criminal record check for a job, an agency or a lease and you want it today, MyCheck is built for that.

Which police service is yours?

Municipal police or RCMP: who polices where you live?

Metro Vancouver is a patchwork. Some cities have their own police service, and the rest are policed by the RCMP, each through its own detachment.

For a MyCheck criminal record check, none of this changes anything. The search is national, so you can order from anywhere in Metro Vancouver. It matters for a police information check or a vulnerable sector check from police, because each service only takes applications from its own residents. Surrey Police Service is still taking over from the RCMP district by district, but it already handles police information checks for Surrey residents.

Jobs, students and practicums

Criminal record check for a job or practicum in Vancouver and Surrey

Employers and staffing agencies across Vancouver and Surrey ask for a criminal record check before a start date, and students at UBC, SFU, BCIT, Langara, Douglas College and Kwantlen often need one for a practicum. Which check depends on who you will work with.

Usually a CRRP or vulnerable sector check

  • Coaching and youth programs
  • Clinical placements with patients
  • Education placements in schools
  • Childcare and care homes

In BC, schools, hospitals, childcare and care facilities, post-secondary institutions and other organisations covered by the Criminal Records Review Act screen people who work with children or vulnerable adults through the Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP). The organisation starts it and sends you a link. If the job or placement involves children or vulnerable people, ask which check you need before you order. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

MyCheck is not affiliated with any school. CRRP details from gov.bc.ca, checked 9 October 2026.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Understand your resultWhat Negative, Cleared and Review mean on your certificate.
Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in Vancouver and Surrey, and only police, the province or an accredited agency can issue them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Police or province only

Vulnerable sector check

Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. In BC it comes from your local police, or through the Criminal Records Review Program when the organisation is covered by the Criminal Records Review Act. It may involve fingerprints.

Accredited agency

Fingerprint-certified check

Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

Vancouver and Surrey criminal record check questions, answered

Can I get a criminal record check in Vancouver online?

Yes, two ways. The Vancouver Police Department takes some police information check applications online, and its checks typically take 1 to 2 weeks. MyCheck is a separate option: a criminal record check you complete entirely online, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes.

Is MyCheck part of the VPD or Surrey Police Service?

No. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider and is not affiliated with the Vancouver Police Department or Surrey Police Service. If you already started an application with either of them, finish it there. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.

Is a MyCheck criminal record check the same as a VPD police information check?

Not exactly. A VPD standard police information check covers convictions, outstanding charges and warrants, court orders, discharges and youth findings within their disclosure periods, and VPD can also check its own local records. MyCheck Level 1 covers criminal convictions, and Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. If the organisation asking has named a VPD or police information check specifically, ask them before you order.

How much does a criminal record check cost in Vancouver and Surrey?

VPD charges $89 for employment, or $114 with fingerprints. Surrey Police Service charges $95.90, or $120.90 with fingerprinting, and a $25 federal fee may apply. Both are free for volunteers with a letter from the organisation. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee.

How long does a criminal record check take in Vancouver?

VPD says its checks are typically completed within 1 to 2 weeks, and can take 4 weeks or more if you lived elsewhere in Canada in the last 5 years or files need review. It does not offer an expedited service. Surrey Police Service gives no set timeframe. With MyCheck, most checks complete in minutes and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which is done in person and takes longer.

I live in Surrey. Do I have to go to a police office?

Not with MyCheck. You order online and finish from your phone. Surrey Police Service takes police information check applications in person only, at its headquarters or a community police office, from Surrey residents who need it for paid or volunteer work in Canada.

I live in Burnaby, Richmond or Coquitlam. Can I still order?

Yes. The search is national, so a MyCheck criminal record check works the same anywhere in Metro Vancouver. Where you live only matters if you need a check from police, such as a vulnerable sector check. Then you apply to the police service or RCMP detachment that covers your community.

What is the Criminal Records Review Program, and do I need it?

The Criminal Records Review Program (CRRP) is the BC government's check for people who work with children or vulnerable adults in organisations covered by the Criminal Records Review Act, such as schools, hospitals, childcare and care facilities, and post-secondary institutions. The organisation starts it and sends you a link. It costs $28, or nothing for volunteers. If your employer or school has asked for a CRRP check, MyCheck cannot replace it.

I want to coach or volunteer at my child's school. Which check do I need?

Usually a vulnerable sector check, because the role involves children. The organisation decides, so ask them first. School boards in BC are covered by the Criminal Records Review Act, so a school will usually send you a CRRP link, which is free for volunteers. Other organisations may send you to your local police, which also check volunteers for free with a letter. MyCheck cannot issue a vulnerable sector check. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains which check you need before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
