Two ways to get it

OPP police record check or MyCheck: what is the difference?

If you live in an OPP community, you can apply to the OPP for a police check or order a criminal record check from MyCheck. Both are police checks. The difference is price, speed and which checks each one can issue.

So the OPP is the right choice if you need a vulnerable sector check, or if you are volunteering and not in a hurry. If you need a criminal record check for a job, an agency or a lease and want it today, MyCheck is built for that.

Which police service is yours?

Is your town policed by the OPP?

The OPP polices more than 300 Ontario municipalities that do not have their own police service. It is not the police service for large urban centres such as Toronto, the GTA, Ottawa, Hamilton, Niagara, Sudbury or Thunder Bay (OPP).

Examples of Ontario communities policed by the OPP, by region

Grey and BruceMeaford, Grey Highlands, South Bruce Peninsula
Northern OntarioElliot Lake, Kapuskasing, Wawa

These are examples, not a full list, and policing arrangements can change. To confirm, enter your address in the map on the OPP record check page. For a MyCheck criminal record check, none of this changes anything. The search is national, so you can order from anywhere in Ontario. It only matters for a vulnerable sector check, which must come from the police service that polices where you live.

Seasonal work in cottage country

Police check for a seasonal job in an OPP community

Resorts, marinas, restaurants, wineries and farms across Muskoka, Georgian Bay, Prince Edward County and Norfolk hire for the season, often with a start date days away. Most of those jobs ask for a criminal record check.

Usually a vulnerable sector check

  • Summer camps and children's programs
  • Clinical placements with patients
  • Education placements in schools

If the job involves children or vulnerable people, ask whether you need a vulnerable sector check before you order. In an OPP community, that check comes from the OPP. Read our guide.

What you get

A police-issued certificate, in your inbox

Your result is a dated certificate in 3 parts, issued by an accredited police service. It goes to you, not to an employer, and you decide who sees it.

  1. 1
Applicant informationThe legal name, date of birth and address the search was run against, and the type of ID used to verify you.
  2. 2
Criminal record checklistThe result, stated against the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Nothing found reads Negative here, and Cleared as the overall result.
  3. 3
Issuing agency informationThe police service that issued it, the date issued, the serial number and the issuing officer's ID. This is what makes it stand up when someone asks where it came from.

A criminal record check is a point-in-time search. It reflects the record on the day it was run.

Understand your resultWhat Negative, Cleared and Review mean on your certificate.
Two levels

Level 1 or Level 2?

If the organisation asking has named a level, order that one. If not, Level 1 is what most job applications ask for. Level 1 answers whether you have a conviction. Level 2 also answers whether anything is currently outstanding.

A quick check before you order

Which check do you need?

Most jobs, agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles accept a criminal record check, which is what we do. Two other checks get asked for in OPP communities, and only police or an accredited agency can issue them.

What we do

Criminal record check

Your name and date of birth searched against the RCMP National Repository by an accredited police service. Accepted by most employers, staffing agencies, landlords and general volunteer roles.

Police only

Vulnerable sector check

Roles working with children, seniors or other vulnerable people need a vulnerable sector check. Only the police service that polices where you live can issue one. In an OPP community, apply online through the OPP. It may involve fingerprints at a detachment.

Accredited agency

Fingerprint-certified check

Immigration, visa and citizenship applications, record suspensions and most uses outside Canada need fingerprint-certified results. Our check also does not include convictions recorded by the Canada Border Services Agency or US Customs.

Not sure which you were asked for? Ask the person requesting it whether a name-based criminal record check is acceptable before you order.

FAQ

OPP police check questions, answered

Can I get an OPP police check online?

Yes. The OPP no longer takes record check applications at detachments, so residents of OPP communities apply online through the OPP's record check page. MyCheck is a separate option: a criminal record check you complete entirely online, issued by an accredited police service after a search of the RCMP National Repository of Criminal Records. Most MyCheck checks complete in minutes.

Is MyCheck the OPP's online portal?

No. MyCheck is a private Canadian provider and is not affiliated with the Ontario Provincial Police. If you already started an application with the OPP, continue it through the OPP's record check page. If you have not started yet and need a criminal record check, you can order here.

How do I know if my town is policed by the OPP?

It depends on where you live, not where you work. The OPP record check page has a map where you can enter your address. The OPP is not the police service for large urban centres such as Toronto, the GTA, Ottawa, Hamilton, Niagara, Sudbury or Thunder Bay. For a MyCheck criminal record check it makes no difference, because the search is national.

My employer asked for an OPP police check. Will they accept MyCheck?

Usually they need a criminal record check, and "OPP check" is simply the name people use locally. Your MyCheck certificate is issued by an accredited police service and names it. If the employer specifically requires a check from the OPP, or a vulnerable sector check, ask them before you order.

How much does an OPP police check cost?

The OPP lists record checks at $41, fingerprints at $90 and volunteer checks as free. MyCheck is $39 for Level 1 and $49 for Level 2, with identity verification included in both and no access fee.

How long does an OPP police check take?

In April 2026 the OPP reported an average turnaround of about 10 days, with a service standard of 30 days, after waits of up to 14 weeks in 2025. With MyCheck, most checks complete in minutes and the rest are usually back within 4 hours. A small number of cases need fingerprint confirmation, which takes longer.

I am volunteering. Do I need an OPP police check?

If you live in an OPP community and are not in a hurry, apply to the OPP: it lists volunteer checks as free. If the role involves children or vulnerable people, you need a vulnerable sector check from the OPP anyway. MyCheck makes sense when the organisation needs your check quickly.

I need a vulnerable sector check. Can you do it?

No. Only the police service that polices where you live can issue a vulnerable sector check, and no private provider can. In an OPP community, that is the OPP. Read our guide to vulnerable sector checks.

What will my result show?

Level 1 shows criminal convictions where no record suspension has been granted. Level 2 adds outstanding charges and warrants, discharges within their disclosure windows, Youth Criminal Justice Act findings and court orders. You declare your own convictions during the process so they can be confirmed against the search.
Understand your result

Who sees my result?

You do. The certificate is delivered to you and nobody else. It is not sent to an employer unless you send it.

Can I get a refund?

No. Checks are non-refundable once submitted, which is why this page explains which check you need before you order. If you are unsure between Level 1 and Level 2, ask whoever requested it first.
